What you need to know
Citizens does not publish one universal mobile-deposit dollar limit for every customer. Your current limit is shown inside the mobile-deposit flow, and availability depends on when the deposit is submitted and whether a hold applies.
Citizens shows the limit when you make the deposit
Citizens says mobile-deposit dollar and count limits apply for customer protection, but it does not present one public figure that safely applies to every account. The bank displays the amount you can deposit on the Make a Deposit and Deposit Amount screens.
If you exceed the available limit, Citizens says the app will tell you. At that point, the practical alternatives are an ATM or branch deposit rather than repeatedly resubmitting the same check.
The submission cutoff affects availability
Citizens says most mobile deposits made before 10 p.m. Eastern on a business day can be used the same business day to cover checks and purchases posting overnight, with the remaining available amount generally ready for withdrawal the next business day.
Deposits made after 10 p.m. ET, on weekends or on holidays are usually available two business days later. That timing is a useful planning rule, but it is still subject to approval and the bank’s funds-availability policy.
A deposit limit and a funds hold are different things
The mobile-deposit limit answers whether Citizens will accept the check through the app. A hold answers when the money can actually be used. A check can be accepted and still have part of the funds delayed while the bank manages the risk that the item could be returned unpaid.
Citizens says that in an extended-hold situation, the full value or $275, whichever is less, will generally be available the next business day, with the remaining amount available when the hold expires.
How to avoid avoidable mobile-deposit problems
Make sure the check is payable to an eligible account owner, sign it as required, capture clear images of both sides and do not redeposit the same paper check elsewhere after submitting it through the app. Citizens excludes items such as foreign checks, travelers checks, money orders and checks that exceed the available deposit limit.
After the app accepts the deposit, keep the original check secure until the bank’s retention instructions allow you to destroy it. The digital credit remains provisional until the item is finally paid.
